Dr. Briana Hagen

Research Scientist | Adjunct Faculty, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph | CEO and Lead Scientist of the Canadian Centre of Agricultural Wellbeing | MSc, PhD.

Dr. Andria Jones is a veterinarian, epidemiologist, and Professor in the Department of Population Medicine, and Director of Well-Being Programming for the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) at the University of Guelph. She has completed a certificate in Applied Positive Psychology and is a certified resilience trainer. Her research passion is the epidemiology of mental health in veterinarians, veterinary students, and agricultural producers. Andria uses mixed research methods (quantitative and qualitative) to achieve her research objectives. She teaches curriculum related to well-being and resilience at the OVC. As a result of her many achievements, Andria has been awarded the Brigid Rivoire Award for Champions of Agricultural Mental Health, two Distinguished Professor Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching, and the Ontario Veterinary College Alumni Association Distinguished Young Alumnus Award.

After completing her Master’s of Science in Community Health and Epidemiology, Briana completed a PhD in the department of Population Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, working under the supervision of Dr. Andria Jones. Her PhD research involved using both quantitative and qualitative research methods to better understand mental health and well-being among Canadian farmers. Using both survey and qualitative data, she examined how farmers and their farms are impacted by mental health outcomes, with a focus on perceived stress and the barriers and facilitators of help-seeking for farmers. Briana also completed a Mitacs Elevate Post-Doctoral Fellowship to continue her investigations around farmer mental health in Canada in 2022. Briana is passionate about collaborative research approaches and building strong partnerships with the agriculture community to co-design research projects.

  • Tipsarp Kittisiam, DVM, MSc

    PhD Candidate

Tipsarp Kittisiam, also known as Minnie, was born in Nonthaburi, Thailand. In 2019, she received her D.V.M. from Kasetsart University, Thailand. Her interest in the spread of zoonotic diseases motivated her to obtain an M.Sc. (in Veterinary Epidemiology) from the same university. In 2021, she was awarded the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) and was invited to conduct part of her master’s research at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, PEI. She has since fallen in love with Canada and is now pursuing her Ph.D. in Epidemiology at the Department of Population Medicine, Ontario Veterinary College, ON, under the supervision of Dr. Andria Jones-Bitton.

Minnie’s experiences during clinical rotations, as well as those of her peers in clinical practice, inspired her to study mental health in veterinarians. She is currently part of a joint research project between the Atlantic Veterinary College and the Ontario Veterinary College that aims to support the positive well-being of veterinarians who are transitioning from graduation into practice.

  • Karli Longthorne

    PhD Student

I am grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of the AJB lab as a PhD student. Our dynamic team, combined with Dr. Jones-Bitton's mentorship has made my experience studying Epidemiology during a pandemic exceptional. Having graduated with a Bachelor's in Psychology, I am thrilled to be researching veterinarian mental health. Specifically, I am investigating veterinarians' coping strategies when faced with mental health challenges, and their perceived ideals regarding what they think the profession might change to promote mental health. Outside of academia, I lead a simple, yet passionate livelihood filled with my furry friends (My dogs Toby and Lola), nature and great food (my favourite is thai curry, ramen or sushi) . I also happen to be a closet musician, and love to tickle the ivories from time to time.

  • Rochelle Thompson

    PhD Student

I am pursuing a PhD under the advisement of Dr. Andria Jones-Bitton and Dr. Briana Hagen. I am so thankful to have the opportunity to learn from so many incredible strong women in this lab and I’m loving every minute of it. I graduated with a BA(h) in psychology with a minor in neuroscience from the University of Guelph in 2020, and an MSc in Population Medicine in 2022. As a chicken farmer, I am naturally passionate about research that will better the mental health of farmers. I believe it is important to be involved in your community and contribute to keeping rural/farming communities safe. In my spare time I am a firefighter at stn 27 (Rockton) and help train rural firefighters with the Hamilton Fire Department.

  • Charlotte Jerome

    OVC SCORE Summer Student

I am pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College. I am passionate about wildlife and exotic medicine, and mental health and environmentalism have always been a priority of mine as well. My experience being mentored by local farmers, coupled with being exposed to Dr. Jones' research during my first year at OVC, made me want to get involved in researching farmer mental health myself, so I could hopefully contribute to a solution and have a positive impact on the wellbeing of farmers and veterinarians in the future. I am beyond grateful for the chance to participate in a summer research position, and to learn from this amazing team of women!

Former Students

  • Megan Campbell

    MSc (Thesis) STUDENT

Megan graduated with a thesis-based Masters under the supervision of Dr. Andria Jones- Bitton in fall 2022. Her research involved analyzing veterinarian interview transcripts to investigate stressors and well-being improvement opportunities for the profession. In her free time, Megan is a local lifeguard, swim instructor, and tri-athlete. Megan is now pursuing a career in genetic counselling.

  • Hayley McKee

    MSc (Coursework) STUDENT

Hayley graduated from McMaster University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Health Sciences, Honours. During her undergraduate research with the McMaster Health Forum, Hayley developed a strong interest in investigating mental health and occupational wellbeing in the clinical field. Thus, the opportunity to join Dr. Andria Jones-Bitton’s lab as an MSc. student was truly a dream come true. Hayley’s research focused on the psychosocial work demands of OVC employees during the COVID-19 pandemic with the hope to translate this research into meaningful wellbeing interventions at the OVC, and similar institutions nationally. Hayley is now in medical school at the University of Toronto. In her spare time, Hayley loves taking her golden retriever, Simba, for walks by the water and promoting inclusion and diversity through the Equity, Inclusion and Diversity committee she founded at Guelph. She hopes to continue investigating wellbeing throughout her career in the medical field.

  • Lana Katz

    RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Lana was a research assistant with AJB research group when she was a third-year B.Sc. (Bio-Medical Science) student at the University of Guelph. She assisted with scoping existing literature to aid in the development of an agriculture literacy program for health care providers who serve Canadian farming communities. She now studies at OVC to become a veterinarian and, outside of academics, she enjoys Olympic weightlifting and spending time with her dog.
